A bright white smile looks beautiful, is friendly and attractive ; fresh breath is a must. In today's blog post, we will take a closer look at how bad breath occurs and what can be done about it.

Bad breath and its causes

Bad breath has various causes. The most common causes are bacteria that settle on the teeth and in the spaces between the teeth . They break down food and its remains and produce bad-smelling sulfur compounds.

Bad breath can be combated very effectively with thorough dental hygiene. You should therefore brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally in the morning and evening. Use dental floss, for example , to thoroughly remove food particles and deposits from the spaces between your teeth.

You can also reduce bacteria in your mouth by cleaning your tongue. Special tongue cleaners or tongue scrapers are ideal for this. The same cleaning principle can also be used in the area of your palate and on the inside of your cheeks.

If the cleaning components mentioned are too much for you, you should familiarize yourself with our emmi®-dent ultrasonic toothbrush. Its specific cleaning function is based on the latest ultrasonic technology. Ultrasonic toothbrushes not only clean the teeth very efficiently, but also the spaces between the teeth, the gums and the oral mucous membranes of odor-causing bacteria.

Prevent bad breath – drinking, chewing, dental care

If the mucous membranes in the mouth are too dry, this can also be a cause of bad breath. Saliva ideally rinses food residues out of the oral cavity. However, if the mucous membranes are too dry and saliva production is impaired or limited, food residues remain in the mouth . They settle between your teeth and even on your tongue and up into the upper throat.

So always make sure you drink regularly and in sufficient quantities. A glass of water is ideal, especially after eating, to rinse your mouth . Chewing sugar-free gum also stimulates saliva production and thus promotes the removal of food particles from the mouth.

Citrus fruits, some vegetables and foods rich in fibre also stimulate the production of saliva. Tea with tannins, alcohol, coffee and regular consumption of nicotine tend to dry out the mucous membranes in the mouth .

If bad breath occurs mainly in the evening, it may be due to a lack of oxygen in the saliva. A lack of oxygen also leads to bad breath and bad breath.

Bad breath: When should you go to the dentist?

Tooth decay and inflammation of the gums can also be the cause of bad breath. Infections in the nasopharynx are rare but can also be a cause of bad breath . Inflammation of the esophagus or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract can also cause bad breath. Diseases of the liver, kidneys or even diabetes can also be associated with bad breath. In these cases, however, bad breath should only be viewed as a symptom.

If your bad breath does not improve despite adequate and thorough dental care, we recommend that you visit a dentist. The first step will be to examine your teeth. If the dentist cannot determine the cause of the problem, he or she will refer you to your family doctor to determine organic causes.
